album coverI got a chance to see this band play at the Trunkpsace in Arizona. Great music can really bring a great crowd together. I would write out more but I wiped out on my bicycle (first go at a foot retention system) a bit ago and my hand is really not liking to space bar. This local Santa Cruz, CA band includes Zack (accordion), Caspian (banjo/piano), Mars (singing saw/mandolin,) David (washtub bass), and KC (washboard/piano). They are often seen on Pacific Ave. performing for spare change.

The Winter EPHere is a band out of Michigan that would probably be fun to see live. If you like The Von Bondies you will probably like these guys. So far Time to Go seems to be my favorite track. Amateur Anthropologist is an indie/garage/punk band from Dearborn Heights, Michigan formed in January 2009 by Alex Gabriel on drums/vocals and David Paco Rochemont on guitar/vocals/harmonica and joined by Paul Corsi on bass/vocals. Their first EP, “Digging Up Bones, Baby!”, was recorded in Alex’s garage using sub-par equipment run by solar power in the summer of 2009. Their second EP, “The Winter EP”, was recorded over two different late night sessions at a professional studio in the basement of an Italian restaurant. Both EP’s were self-released.They have The Winter EP up as a free download on their bandcamp page, so be sure to check that out.

Dropkick Murphys – The Warrior’s Code

album coverToday is St. Patrick’s Day, so what better music to put on than a good version of Flogging Molly. This is probably the best album of one of my favorite east coast punk bands. Dropkick Murphys are a celtic punk band formed in Quincy, Massachusetts, United States in 1996. First playing together in the basement of a friend’s barbershop, the band has made a name for itself for their relentless touring, as well as their annual St. Patrick’s Day weekend shows in Boston. The subjects of their songs often deal with the working class environment in which they grew up. The band put out a series of EPs and were signed by Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong‘s label Hellcat Records. In 1998, they released their first full length album, Do or Die.

album coverI have been swamped with work, so I can only leave you with a 90s skate punk album. Pretty awesome, just not new.  Combining strong melodies and fast paced punk with both personal and political lyrics, the band soon reached audiences all over the world. Early influences include bands such as SNFU, RKL and The Misfits. The band was originally founded by Rodrigo and Erik in high school back in 1989 in Lund, Sweden. After having gone through the usual line-up changes during its formative years, their debut EP “Skate to Hell” was recorded in ’93.

The Flatliners – The Great Awake

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

The second song on this album is awesome, so if you haven’t listened to The Flatliners before give that song a chance first. Unfortunaetly they don’t have anything knew out, but they have a few older albums if you start to get into them. “What do you do when doing what you love gets you nowhere?” asks the opening track on The Great Awake, the second full-length from these Toronto-based punks. The question, delivered with all the gravel-voiced ferocity of a hardened, worn-down clock puncher, betrays the success which has found the endlessly-touring quartet since the release of 2005′s Destroy to Create (Stomp Records/Warner). Far from getting them nowhere, the Flatliners’ five years of passionate melding of raging punk rock, aggressive ska…
