Gun Outfit – Dim Light

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

album coverI finally have internet at my new apartment, and man do I love the speed. Uploading this album was a breeze, so I might end up digging through my old CD collection and uploading some indie albums I bought a while back. Already championed by the LA scene and the Rough Trade shops in the UK, Olympia, WA’s Gun Outfit are an avalanche of intensity and excitement. Dim Light is reminiscent of Meat Puppets, X, Dinosaur Jr, and Hüsker Dü. I haven’t listened to the entire album, but I like what I have heard so far. Playing SXSW got them some well deserved exposure and I look forward to seeing more of them.

Sleigh Bells – Treats

album coverEh, pretty good album, and Pitchfork had good things to say about it. The initial meeting between Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells sounds almost like a scene out of a movie: He was working at a Brooklyn, NY restaurant during the summer of 2008; she, a fifth grade public school teacher, was one of his customers and by chance they started talking about music. A mere week later they were recording together and thus, Sleigh Bells were formed. Last.fm classified this as Hip-Hop, but I don’t see it.

Missent to Denmark – I Am Your Son

album coverThis is just a filler album until I am fully recuperated from my ~120 mile bicycle ride I did this last weekend. Sometimes there are concert memories you will always remember. Two years ago one could see Missent to Denmark live on their first Mini-Tour as a support act around Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Four young lads, who went on stage to collect the audience’s minds for one hour with their filed arrangements, great melodies, small gestures, a big love for details and a devotedness for their songs.

Dr. Dog – Easy Beat

Thursday, May 13, 2010

album coverDr. Dog is a psychedelic rock group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which formed in 1999. The current lineup consists of Scott “Taxi” McMicken (vocals, guitar), Toby “Tables” Leaman (vocals, bass), Zach “Text” Miller (keyboards, guitar), Frank “Thanks” McElroy (guitar) and Eric “Teach” Slick (drums). “There’s a little folk, blues, indie rock, soul, bluegrass–and a whole lot of down-home harmonizing. It conjures images of old friends sitting on a porch swapping instruments and just letting the tape recorder run.” – Doug Wallen

Side not: I finally got around to make a script to display the song IDs on the grooveshark widget page, which saves me time copying it out of the source code. I can’t use playlists because they always double at least the first song making it annoying to listen to, and I listen from my own blog sometimes. Saving a step is always good.

album coverAndrew Kenny is a native Texan who after nearly six years in Brooklyn, NY has returned to beautiful Austin, TX. He’s best known as the singer/songwriter behind mellow indie favorites The American Analog Set. However, he’s also performed as a guest artist with The Album Leaf, Her Space Holiday, Styrofoam, Ola Podrida, Arthur & Yu, and most recently with Broken Social Scene. His latest project is called The Wooden Birds and their first album, Magnolia, was released in May 2009 by Barsuk Records in the US & Canada and on Morr Music in Europe. I really need some good new punk music by the way, so if you have any ideas, please send them my way.

The Postelles – Self Titled EP

Monday, May 10, 2010

album coverThe Postelles are part of an ideological bloodline that connects The Velvet Underground to the Ramones to Blondie and Television to the Walkmen, artists with unique and varied sensibilities, certainly, but who have in common an allegiance to the unabashedly unadorned rock song. If you like this EP look for their EP ‘White Knight’. Both EPs are pretty elusive, so good luck. Considering Albert Hammond Jr of The Strokes is producing their new album, I expect this band to gain some more traction.

Slow Club – Yeah, So?

album coverThis band is new to me, and so far so good. Slow Club are Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor from Sheffield, United Kingdom. They sing using quirky lyrics, a variety of percussion instruments and great vocal interplay. They are currently releasing singles on Moshi Moshi Records and have been on nationwide tours with bands such as Fionn Regan, Noisettes, Hot Club de Paris, Tilly and the Wall, Jamie T and Jeremy Warmsley. The pair have released a series of EPs: Because We’re Dead, Me and You, Let’s Fall Back in Love, Christmas TV and It Doesn’t Have to Be Beautiful. Their debut album, Yeah So, was released on 7 July 2009.
