I wasn’t sure how good this album was going to be, but man this album has been great to wake up to when feeling groggy. The Wombats are a three-piece indie band from Liverpool, England. They are composed of two native Liverpudlians; front man Matthew Murphy, provider of voice, guitar and keyboards, drummer and b-vocalist Dan Haggis and bass and additional vocalist Tord Øverland-Knudsen, a Norwegian who has made his home in the city. The three met at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. The school gave them the chance to play gigs to over 20,000 people in China. This was one of the band’s first trips to play outside the UK.

Peter Bjorn and John (unofficially abbreviated as PB&J) are a Swedish indie rock band, formed in Stockholm in 1999 and named after the first names of the band’s members: Peter Morén (vocals, guitar and harmonica), Björn Yttling (bass guitar, keyboards and vocals) and John Eriksson (drums, percussion and vocals).
They are best known for the 2006 single “Young Folks”, which featured Victoria Bergsman, formerly of The Concretes, and was a top 20 hit in the UK Singles Chart, as well as being featured in football video game FIFA 08. It was also named NME’s second-best track of 2006, beaten only by “Over and Over” by Hot Chip.

From the time I heard the first track on this album I knew I had to post this album. Black Tambourine were one of the earliest Slumberland groups, consisting of members of Whorl and Velocity Girl, plus their pal Pam Berry on vocals. Conceived as an explicitly pop band at a time when pop bands were pretty rare in America, Black Tambourine wore their influences on their sleeves: The Jesus & Mary Chain, of course, but also folks like Phil Spector, Smokey Robinson, Love, The Ramones, Shop Assistants, The Pastels, 14 Iced Bears, Orange Juice and the list goes on

Modern Skirts is an alternative pop band based in Athens, GA. The band consists of four members: Jay Gulley (guitar and vocals), JoJo Glidewell (guitar, piano, and vocals), Phillip Brantley (bass, guitar, and vocals) and John Swint (drums). Probably not the best album I have posted, but thought some might enjoy it. Somehow it reminds me of Counting Crows, which probably is the only reason it made the cut.
Apparently this band is similar to The Albertans, so if you know your Canadian pop, there is a benchmark for you.

Dr. Dog is a psychedelic rock group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which formed in 1999. The current lineup consists of Scott “Taxi” McMicken (vocals, guitar), Toby “Tables” Leaman (vocals, bass), Zach “Text” Miller (keyboards, guitar), Frank “Thanks” McElroy (guitar) and Eric “Teach” Slick (drums). “There’s a little folk, blues, indie rock, soul, bluegrass–and a whole lot of down-home harmonizing. It conjures images of old friends sitting on a porch swapping instruments and just letting the tape recorder run.” – Doug Wallen
Side not: I finally got around to make a script to display the song IDs on the grooveshark widget page, which saves me time copying it out of the source code. I can’t use playlists because they always double at least the first song making it annoying to listen to, and I listen from my own blog sometimes. Saving a step is always good.

This band is new to me, and so far so good. Slow Club are Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor from Sheffield, United Kingdom. They sing using quirky lyrics, a variety of percussion instruments and great vocal interplay. They are currently releasing singles on Moshi Moshi Records and have been on nationwide tours with bands such as Fionn Regan, Noisettes, Hot Club de Paris, Tilly and the Wall, Jamie T and Jeremy Warmsley. The pair have released a series of EPs: Because We’re Dead, Me and You, Let’s Fall Back in Love, Christmas TV and It Doesn’t Have to Be Beautiful. Their debut album, Yeah So, was released on 7 July 2009.

Not much information on them from myspace or last.fm except that they are from New York. Seems like a lot of these bands (Think soundtrack to Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) have been coming out of New York. I tend to like most of them, this one included.
“Charmingly earnest indie-pop songwriting and sprightly chamber pop flourishes make their little record essential listening, and hopefully a sign of good things yet to come.” – Absolutepunk.net

Dressy Bessy is an indie rock band from Denver, Colorado, associated with the Elephant Six Collective. Guitarist John Hill also plays with the Apples in Stereo. Lead vocalist/guitarist Tammy Ealom formed the band with drummer Darren Albert and guitarist turned bassist Rob Greene in 1996. The name was taken from a popular Playskool doll of the 1970s. Hill joined around the time they started recording. They released two singles and an EP in 1997-98 and licensed songs to some compilation albums.
This wasn’t the one I had planned for today, but I was looking at an apartment and hanging out in St. Paul which took up most of the day. I guess that means new music tomorrow.

This album was a pain to get into a grooveshark playlist. The quality dropped below grooveshark’s acceptible limits so I had to change the bitrate and then the sample rate was too high. It was worth it though, as this album will likely be one of your favorites. With infectious melodies accompanied by intricate guitar, crumbling distortion, trumpets, and violins – this minimalist and “sweetly cacophonous” Brooklyn outfit will make you smile or crush your soul depending on your current level of sadness. By the way they just started up their tour, so be sure to check out their myspace for tour dates.
Side note: All playlists I have been exporting include the first track twice, and I can’t seem to find away around that. Apologies.

The Radio Dept. is a Swedish pop band signed to Labrador Records. They have released three full length albums, and a series of singles and EPs. The band originated in Lund, Sweden. In 1995, The Radio Dept. was formed by Elin Almered and Johan Duncanson (who were old school friends). The name was taken from a gas station/radio repair shop in Lund, Sweden, which had a large sign with the name Radioavdelningen, (“The Radio Department” in Swedish) hanging outside their shop. Since 1995 members have been coming and going and at some points there has never really been a Radio Department at all.
