Astronautalis – Pomegranate

album coverIt was only after having chosen the name Astronautalis for himself while in high school in Jacksonville, Florida, that the rapper (born Andy Bothwell) began to make himself heard in the local circuit, winning battles and competing at the Scribble Jam. Though he was known for his witty freestyling, Astronautalis’ musical influences and interests fell outside the hip-hop realm, as well, and he performed on the Warped Tour for three years.

Just came across this artist thanks to the user jamdem on reddit, so thank you jamdem. Also, grooveshark still is adding the first song twice in my playlists, so just click on the 3rd song after the first one plays.

Dessa – A Badly Broken Code

album coverHere is yet another great artist from Minneapolis. Dessa’s first release with Doomtree, False Hopes, introduced a unique sensibility to underground hip-hop: literary, bitter-sweet, and wry. She alternated between a clever, droll persona as an emcee and her earnest, unaffected delivery as a singer with a low, clear alto voice. Her a cappella arrangements delicate and expressive, full of sad, old world harmonies. False Hopes attracted a varied set of ferociously dedicated fans in the Midwest and beyond. The press compared her to Lauryn Hill and Ladybug, and then as “equal parts Ani DiFranco and Mos Def” (Rift Magazine). Best place to purchase her album would probably be through her Bandcamp (external links).

Flobots – Survival Story

album coverIt is pretty hard to top Fight with Tools, so I will let you all decide how this album compares. Flobots are an alternative rap/rock band from Denver, CO. They consist of Jonny 5 (vocals), Brer Rabbit (vocals), Mackenzie Roberts (viola/vocals), Jessie Walker (bass), Andy Guerrero (guitar) and Kenny Ortiz (drums). The band became popular in 2008 when their singles “Handlebars” and “Rise” became hits on American alternative rock radio. When a pair of quick-witted emcees joins forces with a battle-hardened, groove-fusing rhythm section, a classically trained violist and trumpet player, the result is a sound that explores and expands the frontiers of live hip-hop.

  • Cracks In The Surface3:55
  • The Effect4:27
  • Defend Atlantis5:03
  • If I4:44

Sage Francis – A Healthy Distrust

I figured it was time to put some more hip-hop on here. If you like this guy you should really check out Cecil Otter, a member of Doomtree. Paul “Sage” Francis (born november 18 1977 in Miami, Florida) is a artist based in Providence, Rhode Island. He is a vegetarian and also chooses to abstain from drugs and drinking, though doesn’t label himself as “straight-edge” because he believes “you shouldn’t define yourself by what you don’t do.” Noted for his intense flow and sharp wit, Francis has won acclaim both as a freestyle battler and as an unapologetically intellectual lyricist. Francis uses a broad emotional palette to address a wide range of personal, cultural, and issues.

P.O.S. (born Stefon Alexander) is an alternative hip-hop musician from Minnesota. He is a also a member of the alternative rap collective Doomtree. His rapping style is heavily influenced by punk bands such as Kid Dynamite and Fugazi. This guy is really amazing. I met him while he was filming one of his music videos that had lots of bicycles. Sadly though, I must not have made the cut. One of the shots was actually done in my alleyway at the first apartment I lived in when I moved to Minneapolis.
